Hong De Lions visited several schools during the Chinese New Year (CNY) period. Our first booking was at St Margaret's in Berwick on Friday 4th February. Due to rain that day, we performed inside the school Hall to Senior as well Junior school children. After the second performance, we let some of the kids experience what it is like under the lions. We had two massive queues! We think some of them re-joined the queue when they came out of the lion! During the second week of CNY, our lion went to Monash College to perform for all the International students. The performance was in the courtyard outside the College in front of lot of students and the director of the College, Faye Lambert. During the last week of CNY, our lion performed at Serpell Street Primary School, Camberwell Grammar School and also at Balwyn North Primary School. We arrived at Serpell Street PS to a massive reception of 950 kids with only one packet of lollies! We made up for the shortfall by giving away fridge magnets as prizes for correct answers in a Q and A about CNY and lion dancing.
We were well armed with several packets of lollies at both Camberwell Grammar School on the 15th day of CNY and Balwyn North Primary School. At CGS, we performed at the Junior school during lunchtime followed by a performance in the Middle School undercroft. A member of our team was an old boy and he was very pleased that he was able to perform at his old school, watched by his teachers from Junior and Middle Schools and also the Head, Dr Paul Hicks. Later on the same day, we arrived at Balwyn North Primary School to a massive crowd of kids and parents. Our lion was mobbed by hungry kids wanting to catch lollies thrown by our lion! We ended the performance to the loud sound of firecrackers (a first for this school). Thank you to all the teachers who have booked us for these performances, it is always a joy to lion dance for the school children!
