News on Hong De Lion Dance activities.

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to have Sifu Chong Kok Fu from Kun Seng Keng in Muar, Malaysia come to Melbourne to run a series of workshops for us. Sifu Chong was the reigning Lion Dance Champion with his head player Si Tiam Yong from 2006-2009. They hold the current record of 19 World Championship Titles. After retiring from competition in 2009, both ex-champions coach for KSK and affiliated teams. This is Sifu Chong's first visit to Melbourne and it was great having him here for 6 days running 4 workshops over the weekend. Our workshops started on Friday night and extended through the weekend until Monday night. Thank you for the team for making an effort to come out, some of them did not work on the weekend to attend. The knowledge we have gained from the weekend was already put into practice and we could see improvements from some of our members already, all thanks to a fantastic coach with vast experience in the art of lion dance. We hope to have the opportunity to train with him again in the near future. We would like to thank Master Siow Ho Phiew and Mr Tan Ching Hong (KSK) for granting us this unique experience!

A short video of our weekend can be viewed on our Youtube Channel.

It is very rare that we do two wedding bookings on the same night. The stars were aligned and the timing was perfect for both weddings. The first one was at 6:45pm at the Bennettswood Bowls Club in Box Hill South. The couple are not Asian, but they have lived in China for number of years and can speak Mandarin. Our lions surprised the guests after the wedding ceremony on the Bowling Greens (another first-timer for us). Congratulations Sarah and Paul and thank you for inviting us to be part of your celebration!

After this, we drove to Ascot Vale for the second wedding performance at 8:30pm in Happy Receptions. Congratulations to Giang and Chahoon and thank you for having us perform on your special day! These are our wedding bookings for the year. We are taking a well earned rest from performances to prepare for Chinese New Year!

We have lost count of how many times we have performed at Sheldon Receptions. Last night our wedding lions performed there again for Qeen and Hoa's wedding reception. We must thank our friends from Jin Wu Koon in Sydney for the recommendation. Thank you Qeen and Hoa for booking us, it was a pleasure to perform for you and your guests!

Congratulations to Andy at Table Lamp Restaurant Bar at 280 Little Lonsdale Street yesterday. Our lions started at street level with a short performance before heading upstairs to the Restaurant/Bar. The inside looks fantastic and the style of food served is Asian-Fusion. Link to the restaurant's website can be found here.

One of our favourite venues for performances is Luminare in South Melbourne. Parking is convenient and it is close to the city. Often when we are there, the sun is setting (the views are magnificent from the venue) and we perform when it is dark. Last Sunday we performed well before the sun has set and with all the windows opened at the venue, the city view from the venue was magnificent! Thank you to Isabella and James for inviting us to perform on their special day. The two little nephews in the photo were thrilled to catch our lucky oranges. Congratulations!

For a change, last weekend, we performed closer to our training HQ! We performed for the opening of Tre Viet restaurant, on Ballarat Highway in Sunshine. Even though we did not know the owners, there were some familiar staff in the dining room who used to work in restaurants in Chinatown. Congratulations and thank you for the lovely meal and Vietnamese coffee which kept us going for the rest of the day at training last Sunday! Thank you to our two members who travelled all the way from Springvale for this morning performance! They literally pass 5 other lion teams to get to training each Sunday!

Another first for Hong De! We performed at a railway station for the first time! We were invited by VicTrack to perform at the opening of the newly refubished Glen Waverley station.  We went from one end of town to another last weekend to perform at two shop openings. The second one was in Mountain Highway, Bayswater for the opening of DirecFresh. There was a large crowd there waiting for the lion dance when we arrived. Our lions performed both outside and inside the shop. Afterwards, we were offered some of the suckling roast pig - delicious! Thank you Ben for booking us and today we received another booking for Chinese New Year! We will be back again on the 21st of February!

We got a phone call last Friday to perform at the opening of My Specs Optometrist in Hampshire Road, Sunshine the next day! It was lucky for our client that we were able to attend the opening. We performed at the client's daughter's wedding last year and at the back of the shop was a 3 month old baby! Congratulations Michelle and Michael! Three of our wedding couples that we have performed for have had babies this year!
Anyway, we would like to congratulate Thao on the opening of her new business and wish her all the best! Thanks for booking us again!

Phing and Mark at Sheldon ReceptionsIt's been a while since we've had two weddings in one weekend! The first one was for Phing and Mark in the Delphinium Room at Sheldon Receptions with one lion. It was our first time in that room as we usually performed in the larger Bliss Room. The next one was held on Sunday night at Manor on High (our second time there) in Epping for Tracy and Jalil. The groom rode a rickshaw into the room with the Bride and flower girls in tow! It was certainly a fun wedding! Thank you again to both couples for booking us!

We performed in front of over 200 Tupperware Representatives at the Tupperware Ovation Sales Night at the Manningham Function Centre. It was pure coincidence that the lion we brought to event matched the Tupperware colours. The reason for the lion dance? There was an incentive trip to Asia being announced that night! Thank you Chris for booking us!

A mid-week lion dance performance at the re-opening of the Westpac branch at QV was well attended by over 100 guests. There was very little room for our lion to perform. A string of firecrackers were lit at the conclusion of the performance to declare the branch opened. Thank you to the branch manager, Judy Tran for booking us! Congratulations!
