News on Hong De Lion Dance activities.

The 10th Genting World Lion Dance was held last weekend in Malaysia. There were a total of 25 participants in this biennial event from USA, Australia, Thailand, Burma, Brunei, Singapore, China, Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong and of course Malaysia. The event started with two days of preliminary with the top 9 joining the defending Champion from 2010 (Malaysia Kun Seng Keng) in the Finals on Sunday. Australia was represented by two teams from Sydney - Cheung Keung and Jin Wu Koon. For the Cheung Keung team, Henry and Willis have been there many times before and scored 8.17 on the first day. The Jin Wu Koon team introduced two new competitors Ian and Matty - both have been to Genting before but not under the lion. Due to two falls, they only scored 5.59 (not a bad effort for first timers). For the first time since 1994, the infamous Muar KSK team has been dethroned by another Malaysian team. The 2012 Champion is the Kedah Hong Teik Lion Dance Association (our brother Hong De school). Congratulations to all the participants. More photos and video links can be found on our Facebook fanpage. All the preliminary scores are listed as well.

Crown Studio3What a busy weekend we had last weekend! Three performances over two days! We performed for the first time at Crown Studio 3 for a Travel Associates dinner function with a Asian theme of course. We had to arrive early as our lions were going to greet guests. The tables were beautifully decorated with red birdcages and ornamental trees and the backdrop was all lit up with red lights. We prepared inside as guests arrived for pre-dinner drinks outside the venue. When it was time for the guests to enter the venue, our musicians started and the lions were inside the doorway welcoming the guests. Once all the guests were seated, we proceeded to perform on the dance floor, entertaining all the guests.

Boyd House OpeningThe very next morning, we arrived in Southbank (it was a very cold morning) for the opening of the Boyd House Community Hub. The Boyd House was previously a private Girls School which has now since been converted to a Community Hub with a great library, Playgroup, Maternal welfare and rental areas for artists. The Boyd House was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Robert Doyle and attended by Councillors Ken Ong and Kevin Louey. Our lion performed briefly at the start and later roved at the back of Boyd House.

The performance was a surprise for guests so we had to arrive early and hide in a room next door. When it came time to perform, our two lions burst into the room and roved amongst the guests before proceeding to the dance floor for the main performance. Thank you to the team for a great performance!

Ernest performing for the Today Show for L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion

It is with regret that we bid farewell to one of our Founding Members at Hong De Lion Dance Association. Ernest Tan has been with us since the inception of the Association. He started his lion dance training at Hin Hua High School in Klang under instructors from Khuan Loke Lion Dance Association. He is also a founding member of the Wen Qing Lion Dance Troupe in Klang.

He helped train our team for performances in Melbourne and Sydney. He participated as a music player for Khuan Yee Lion Dance Association at the last World Lion Dance Championship in 2010 in Genting, Malaysia. We will miss him, his torturous training sessions and his great cooking! We wish him well in his new endeavour in Klang, running the family business. We will keep in touch and hope to invite him back to Melbourne for Chinese New Year next year!

L-R Robin n Cecilia (Hong De), Mr n Mrs Tan (KSK), Silvie n Denny, Mr Ben Fu (KSK), Mrs Siow and Master Siow (Wan Seng Hang), HB Siow (WSH) and Andy ChanHong De Lion has had a great brotherhood relationship with Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance (Muar as well as Indonesia). Our Committee members, Vincent and Cecilia met Denny Kurniawan for the first time in 2008 when we were there for the World Lion Dance Championship in Genting. A strong friendship has since developed with Hong De inviting members of Indonesia KSK to Melbourne to help during Chinese New Year in 2011. When Denny was here last year he mentioned that he was getting married this year and would like us to attend his wedding. The wedding was held on Friday 25th May in the Sands Ballroom, Jakarta. It was attended by Cecilia and Robin from Hong De, Master Siow and Mrs Siow from Wan Seng Hang, Malaysia, Mr and Mrs Tan Hing Choong from Muar KSK, Malaysia and senior representatives of Muar KSK, Singapore KSK, Indonesia KSK and Indonesia Kong Ha Hong. There were over 850 guests at the wedding reception with two lion dance performances by Kong Ha Hong and Indonesia KSK on jongs. Thank you to Denny for your kind hospitality for our short visit to your country. It was great to see some our our friends again from Malaysia as well as Indonesia. Congratulations Denny and Silvie!! We wish you all the best for the future!

We were in constant communication with the organisers Abdul Abdullah and Nathan Beard until the launch of the project in Melbourne on 17th May. One of our lions was on display for the duration of the Exhibition in NGV Studio, Federation Square. We were invited to perform at the closing ceremony of the Exhibition on Friday 25th May. The exhibition is of a fictitious Asian Embassy with icons from Asian culture displayed within the Embassy. We were very excited to be part of this exhibition.

Happy 4th Birtrhday Hong De!!We celebrated our fourth birthday on Saturday 5th May at Golden Chef Cooking in Moonee Ponds. The private function was held at one of our member's family Cooking School/Function Room. It was good to see all our members there in the one place with some of the parents in attendance. We also had a chance to watch the DVD from last year's Sentosa Lion Dance Championship which one of our members brought back from a recent trip to Singapore. We had lots of beautiful food followed by a birthday cake. Thank you to all our members for you support over the last four years, could not have done it all without you! Onto to the future and beyond! Keep up the great work!!

PappaRich ChadstonePappaRich ChadstoneOn Sunday 6th May, our lion was present at the third PappaRich store to be opened in Australia at the famous Chadstone Shopping Centre. The store is located outside the centre and was very busy like all the other stores. Our lion entertained guests inside the restaurant as well as shoppers gathered outside the restaurant. We apologise for the quality of the photos as they were all taken on the iPhone (left the camera at home that day!) We wish the owners all the best and look forward to the next opening at Point Cook!

RAAF SaleOn the weekend, a team of 11 headed off to Sale (about 3 hours drive out of Melbourne). We arrived at the Royal Australian Air Force Base in the afternoon. After going through security checks, we were led to the Air Traffic Control School. We were introduced to Commander Peter Cooper who then led us through a tour of the school. We learnt about how courses are conducted at RAAF and what skill sets are most suited to Air Traffic Controllers (left-handers, music players and artists). We were then taken through various areas with simulations of control towers. We were pretty impressed with all the hardware until we were taken into the first of two 360 degree simulation rooms! The installation cost over $9 million! Later that night, we came back to the base to perform at the Officers Mess Ball, with a Chinese theme of course. Our lions posed for photos with all the Officers and their partners beforehand. We would like to thank Mandi Castle for booking us in the first place and Commander Peter Cooper for kindly giving us a very informative tour of some great equipment! We stayed overnight in Sale and did a little bit of sightseeing the next day before heading back to Melbourne. It was so funny that we were asked so many times by the locals what we were doing there. We must have looked out of place!!
